Do people realize what a “low metabolism” really means?

Question by Raj (rajb1037): Do people realize what a “low metabolism” really means?
I was talking to a friend recently while she was munching on a sizable snack, and was shocked to hear her mention that she had a low metabolism.

So I’m wondering if people realize what having a low metabolism really means.

I know from experience, having had my ass kicked by hypothyroidism in my late-teens.

Sure, there was a huge increase in weight, but another major symptom was.. a complete LOSS of appetite.

Before being diagnosed, I barely ate a meal or – on a good day – two daily, and small ones at that. I had an outright aversion to food.

People who eat plenty and gain weight have a *NORMAL* metabolism. If you have a clinically significant low metabolism, you’ll have a loss of appetite, period. Just like a drop in body temperature, lower heart rate, etc.. it’s not just a “possible” symptom.

If you’re munching on candy bars, chips and dip, having a thousand calories at each meal, etc.. you don’t have a low metabolism.

Do people just not understand this?
It’s insulting to someone like me who really dealt with it to have it tossed around as a random, nonsensical excuse for obesity.

What do you think?

People as a whole generally don’t understand anything about medical things, but I think it’s mainly a way to try to soften the blow (because they have an uncontrollable “excuse”) of obesity.

Sorry, but you are WRONG!! I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism several years ago – and I certainly DID NOT lose my appetite. I also had several ‘second opinions’, including one from a hospital consultant.

metabolism is the process in which a chemical is processed in the body. someone who says they have a high metabolism must have a fast heart rate and be really hot. so no ‘high’ metabolisms dont exist. its why we excersise.
